If I’m in my car and it’s between 10am and 3pm, then there’s a good chance I am listening to sports radio on 610 WIP-I’m a fan of Glen Macnow and Anthony Gargano, the pair who host that time slot. I’ve always liked the fact that these two guys just really seem to be fans of the sports they cover, are very knowledgeable about them (just don’t ask Glen about soccer!), and are fun to listen to. I also greatly respect the civil and personable way they dialogue with their callers; If I was to call a sports radio program, it would be this one-no contest.
That being said, I heard a really cool thing on their show today, and it reminded me of how important to partner and network with one another, and how those relationships can make a difference in our communities. A popular local TV anchor had called into the show and mentioned that he was on his way to help his wife-who’s car had just broken down on the Schuylkill Expressway, I think. Immediately the radio hosts put out a call (over the air) to some of their usual callers who they knew were tow-truck operators, to get some help. Amazingly, I had only driven about a half-mile before someone called the show and said he was close by with his truck and could meet the husband where his wife’s car had broken down.
Normally, most people probably don’t like when a program gets away from its usual content (in this case sports news and issues). But I love that Gargano and Macnow, once they heard what was going on in their friend’s life, instantly reached out to help using their ability to connect with the public. And it says something about these guys that they know and remember something about their callers, small details like what those folks do for a living. I’m glad the sports talk got interrupted today; it’s cool to see (and hear!) people helping each other out. Well done Glen and Anthony!
